New Thai You Must Try

Food Shoot 19th June 2014

We have a weakness for really great modern Thai food (who doesn’t right?), so when we heard rumours of a Longrain-inspired Thai restaurant Soi 60 setting up shop in Robertson Quay, we were on high alert.

When you think of Thai food in Singapore, your mind yoyos between the extremes of excellent hawker-style fare the likes of Golden Mile, and exquisite fine dining fit for royalty. What has been missing is the quality modern Thai restaurant in between. We’re glad to say that Soi 60 fills that niche very well.

Hello Chez Longrain
Opened by The Red Door Group (aka the people behind Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse), Soi 60 brings something we direly need – reasonably priced, contemporary Thai cuisine – to Singapore’s bustling dining scene. The best part? They teamed up with the award-winning Chef Martin Boetz (formerly of Sydney’s famed Longrain restaurant) to create a menu embodying the essential flavours of Thai cuisine – sweet, sour, spicy and salty.

Expect refreshing small plates and appetisers like Grilled Prawns with Caramelised Coconut on Betel Leaves, Sashimi-style Tuna with Thai Salad, and the ever-popular Tom Yum soup. For larger plates to share, we were blown away by the Panaeng Beef Rib Curry with Peanuts and Thai Basil, and the Crispy Whole Snapper gets a double thumbs-up.

Booze Benefits
Another big tick from us is on the cocktails and wine selection. Firstly, the cocktails are – what else – Thai inspired like the Royal Julep (dark rum, kaffir lime, and gula Melaka) and the Tamarind Sour (bourbon shaken with tamarind essence and sugar).

Wine lovers will be high-fiving as the wine menu doesn’t have a bottle priced over $100. (Yes that’s no typo) We really hope this starts a trend of reasonable priced wine menus in Singapore. (Read: restaurateurs, take Soi 60’s lead on this please).

Special Tasting Menu
Finally we just need to highlight their fabbo 9-dish tasting menu – at $45 per person, it’s a steal.

Verdict?
We will be back.
