Not that there’s anything wrong with being single (the grass is always greener), but if you’re looking to snag a date in time for Valentine’s Day, here’s how you can get started – all you gotta do nowadays is swipe, click, and – in the words of Daft Punk, get lucky!
Tinder
This location-based app from the US soared in popularity after its launch at a University of South Carolina party (and other college campuses). Using the app is simple – login using your Facebook account, flick through profiles of folks nearby, anonymously ‘like’ or ‘pass’ on the profiles, and if someone you ‘liked’ likes you back, you’ll receive an alert to start chatting! The sad, hard truth is that you’re being judged (more often than not) by your looks, since Tinder compromises on wordy personal details for an uncluttered interface. It’s virtual tough love. We give Tinder two thumbs up for user-friendliness and addictiveness, and it might even give instagram a run for its money as a handy time-filler while you’re waiting for your bus.

Paktor
Singapore’s answer to Tinder, Paktor (which means ‘dating’ in the hokkien dialect) was born when Singaporean Joseph Phua turned single and was hit with the idea of a fuss-free matchmaking service. You’ll notice stark similarities to Tinder’s interface, though we’re not complaining, but what sets it apart from its American counterpart is a greater representation of the local crowd. With Tinder, you’re more likely to chance upon tourists (mistaken as expats) that are only in town for a couple of days – though sometimes that can be for the best!

Grindr/Blendr
Kudos to Grindr and Blendr for looking out for the LGBT community! Currently the largest all-male location based social network around, Grindr allows you to create a profile within minutes by answering a couple of questions and uploading a picture of your choice (hunks with six packs aren’t shy to show them). Done all that? Start chatting, trading photos, and socialising with other men around your location! Though not officially declared, Blendr is fast becoming a social networking tool for lesbians in the region.
