If you think this haze is killing you – well, you’re probably right. The good news is there are ways around to protect you and your fam!
Here’s a kit to get through it.
Why is this happening?
‘Slash and burn’ agricultural practices are carried out in Indonesia every June and October. This land clearance is to revitalize the soil after harvest and prepare it for another round of agriculture. Burning is the most efficient (and for many, the most financially viable) method of land clearance.
What can we do?
1. Stay indoors, especially if you suffer from heart and lung diseases. Really need to step outside? Wear a mask to keep the particles out.
2. Avoid physical activity outdoors if PSI levels are above 80. Occupy the kids with indoor activities – see our full list for ideas.
3. Off with your contact lenses! The particles in the air might cause burning sensations, irritation, and swelling of the top layer of our eyes – contacts might make this worse. Use preservative-free eye lubricants hourly to remove allergens.
4. Feeling itchy? Be generous with moisturizer – it helps protect your skin against the nasty stuff in the air.
5. If you’re coughing, your airways and lungs might be inflamed. Drink more water and again, stay indoors.
