Beer Market | TGIF December 2014 | Honeycombers Singapore

We’ve come to the year’s final edition of TGIF! We’ll go ahead and say it was a no-holds-barred thing and we’ve not included anything diet-friendly or wholesome here. Save that for the New Year!

#1 – Baked goods at Japanese bakery Asanoya

We’re overjoyed super popular Japanese bakery chain Asanoya decided to set up its first overseas outpost here in Singapore. Their range of baked treats are nowhere near simple, and they’re to die for. We’re loving the hotsellers like the sweet potato yuzu Danish, the bacon quiche, and the decadent cream cheese and ham-stuffed crispy donut.
Asanoya, Wilby Central, 15 Queen Street, Singapore 188537, p. 6703 8703.

#2 – “Kopitiam pasta” at Ah Bong’s Italian

You can’t expect anything ordinary when it comes to Tiong Bahru, Singapore’s hippest neighbourhood. One of its latest additions, Ah Bong’s Italian, offers pasta and crème brulee at more-than-reasonable prices (we’re talking $4 to $6 here!), and is only open a few hours a day (the entire place transforms into Two Face in the evening – a pizza place and taproom). Our pick? The mac & cheese with truffle oil, of course. The menu’s ever-changing though, so call ahead to check.
Ah Bong’s Italian, #01-46, 56 Eng Hoon Street, Singapore 160056, p. 9650 6194.

#3 – Salted egg-everything at Beer Market

Know what’s better than the ‘deep fried chicken wings and beer’ combo? Salted egg yolk wings and beer. Yes, really. Beer Market at Clarke Quay now has salted egg specials on the menu, including deep fried wings coated in your favourite sinful sauce, and a salted egg mayo pizza, topped with crabmeat, tiger prawns, and fish.
Beer Market, #01-17/02-02 Clarke Quay, 3B River Valley Road, Singapore 179021, p. 9661 8283.

#4 – Afternoon tea at Hyde & Co.

Anglophiles, make a beeline for this English-themed café that’s all about sweet – and savoury – crumpets, the full works (or as the British would say, “the full English breakfast”), and tea (well, obvs), a whopping 45 kinds to choose from, to be exact. Expect a couple of local twists here and there – think gula Melaka crumpets and a croque madame sprinkled with hebi hiam (spicy dried shrimps).
Hyde & Co., 785 North Bridge Road, Singapore 198753, p. 9369 4369.

#5 – Art and food at Hungry Heroes

It’s a feast for the senses at Hungry Heroes – a superhero-themed restaurant that shares its space with art gallery, Art Art and Away. Carnivores would dig the bites available at Hungry Heroes, especially the monstrous Steak-out, a meat-heavy platter good for five to six famished foodies. After stuffing your face, you can pop by Art Art and Away to check out their range of quirky artworks and home décor pieces.
