Planning your next big, exotic adventure? Well, the upcoming months of July to October are peak game viewing months in Southern Tanzania, off the well-trodden safari tracks of Africa. And two specialty lodges, Sand Rivers Selous and Kigelia Ruaha, have just the thing for you!
Home to approximately 10, 000 elephants, over 475 bird species, and one of the largest lion populations in Africa, Ruaha National Park is a remote and game-rich haven (which totally enhances your safari experience). The Kigelia Ruaha is located in a secluded grove on the banks of the Ifuguru Sand River. Embark on game viewing from this base by vehicle and on foot. Expect accommodation to be large tents with wide verandahs, en-suite bathrooms (flush toilets included!), and outdoor safari-style bucket showers under the stars.
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Selous Game Reserve has more hippos, wild dogs, and Cape buffalo than any other African reserve or park. Make camp in the spacious open-fronted cottages of Sands River Selous situated along the banks of the Rufiji River, and enjoy game viewing by vehicle, on foot, and by boat.
Not only are there opportunities to go fishing and indulge in bush picnics, you can also go fly-camping, which involves sleeping under mosquito net tents in complete wilderness. It doesn’t mean you have to slum it, of course. A bucket shower with hot water and short-drop toilet will be set up behind camp, and a full complement of staff provide a full breakfast, light lunch and three-course candlelit dinner.
Thinking of bringing the kids? While both camps welcome children over the age of 8, do note that only those over 12 years old are allowed to participate in walking safaris and fly-camping.
From US$5,139 per person, 3 nights at Kigelia and 4 nights at Sands Rivers with light aircraft transfers included. For more information, get in touch with our friends at Asia to Africa Safaris.
