Powerful Women and Topless Tours

This week’s news in the nutshell:

  • Forbes’ 2014 ranking of the world’s most powerful women is out! Unsurprisingly in the top spot is Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel. More than half of women featured are “female firsts”, like Janet Yellen (first female chair of the US Federal Reserve) and Mary Barra (first female CEO of General Motors).
  • Apple has acquired Beats Electronics – the guys who came up with cult earphones Beats by Dr. Dre – and Beats Music, the subscription streaming music service. Guess what this means? Yep, both Beats co-founders, Iovine and Dr. Dre, will be joining Apple as acqui-hires.
  • Fashion and sports do walk down the aisle once in awhile. Fashion maestro Giorgio Armani will be dressing Bayern Munich players and the club’s management in tailor-made suits with personalized labels for each player – sweet!
  • The latest global movement going nuts on social media is called The Topless Tour. It’s tamer than it sounds though. Started by three young European women, the idea is to open your bare chest and heart to the world (whether you’re travelling or not). Crazy, but we reckon it’s really liberating.
  • Legendary author, poet, and Hallmark-card writer Maya Angelou has passed on at the age of 86. This African-American literary icon was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010. We quote her: “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass.” Rest in peace, ma’am.
