Urban Decay Naked Wild West Eyeshadow Palette

Makeup-free days have been the norm for me ever since working from home became a thing, so it’s been a while since I got creative with my eye looks. But Urban Decay’s Naked Wild West has got me excited over an eyeshadow palette again. This desert-inspired selection takes hues from limitless sand dunes, shimmery night skies and bright succulents for a varied and pigmented palette. I love the vibrant colour payoff that every shade gives. And the ultra soft, double ended brush transfers colours like a dream!

Mandy T. Lemongrass + Lemon bath salt

Mandy T. Lemongrass + Lemon bath salt | Beauty Reviews
Photography: Mandy T.

Not all of us have the luxury of soaking in a tub at home. So I took advantage of my recent staycation to use this baby. And boy, was it worth the wait! Local beauty brand Mandy T’s best-selling lemongrass and lemon bath salt is heaven in a jar. The handcrafted mixture has a natural blend of Himalayan salt, sea salt, ginger powder and essential oils. There are even pieces of lemongrass in it. I put about five tablespoons into the tub and basked in the amazing smells while the tub filled up. The best part? Soaking in the tub while the bath salt calmed my mind and soothed my body aches. Absolute bliss! Oh, and if you don’t want to wait till your next staycay, just get a small bucket and use it as a foot soak.

Cetaphil Pro AD Derma Skin Restoring Moisturizer

I hate dry, ashy skin but my elbows and knees seem to be attracted to it. So slathering my body with luscious lotion is a key step during my post-shower routine. I have slightly sensitive skin so fragrance-filled body lotions are a no-no. Cetaphil’s skin restoring body moisturiser hits all the right notes – it’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and preservative-free. It’s also great for eczema-prone skin. I use it right after my shower on slightly damp skin or whenever I’m feeling a little dry. It’s also lightweight and non-greasy. A definite win for me!
Cetaphil Pro AD Derma Skin Restoring Moisturizer, $42.42, available online via Shopee, Lazada and Watsons

Yours bounce back balancing toner

yours-bounce-back
Photography: Yours

The combo of planning a wedding (yes, I just got hitched!) plus all the mask-wearing hasn’t been good on my skin. It’s looking a little dull as of late so I knew I had to do something. This toner helps to restore life into my skin thanks to a healthy dose of niacinamide, essential minerals and natural plankton extract to nourish and strengthen its natural barrier. My skin looks more plump and pesky bumps don’t stay long. The toner also soaks well onto my skin and definitely boosts the rest of my regime.
Yours, $38, available online

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation

I have a confession to make. As much as I was obsessed with Fenty Beauty’s launch, the highly-raved liquid foundation just doesn’t work for me. No matter how much I blend, my oily skin makes it look patchy. I’ve also been skipping foundation, using just a concealer and loose setting powder for a no-makeup, makeup routine. But sadly, I’ve been getting more dark spots so I need extra coverage. Thankfully, the launch of the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation came at the perfect time.

The lightweight powder foundation offers light to full coverage and gives a non-cakey but matte finish. I also like how it doesn’t settle on my pores. I use a foundation brush for more coverage on darker areas and go in with the sponge (in the compact) for touch ups on the go. Tip: get a shade lighter as the formula is known to oxidise. And remember to moisturise and prep with primer!
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation, $55, available at Sephora

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Pink Dream Body Cream

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Pink Dream Body Cream beauty reviews singapore
Photography: Glow Recipe

Glow Recipe’s signature watermelon scent can now be applied all over your body, too. If the erratic weather has put a damper on your mood, this refreshing, summery body cream might lift your spirits. Powered by watermelon seed butter, hyaluronic acid and watermelon extract, this nourishing cream feels luxurious and soothing on the skin. Fun fact: this product was inspired by founders Sarah and Christine’s Korean tradition of using chilled watermelon rind to soothe irritated skin. Apply an extra layer on areas like elbows and knees for smoothening benefits. The ingredients list includes hibiscus AHA, which exfoliates roughness away. I like doubling up on this cream at bedtime, so that I wake up to soft, hydrated skin. Now, if there’s one thing I could add to this lovely formula, it would be a touch of sun protection for daytime wear.

Est. Lab Optimalift A+ Intelligent Eye Revitaliser Tri-Action Massager 2.0

Est. Lab Optimalift A+ Intelligent Eye Revitaliser Tri-Action Massager 2.0
Photography: Est. Lab

Sleep? What’s that? If you’re an insomniac like me (side note: we’ve even got a gift guide for the sleep-deprived), your eye bags may be as dark as mine. I’m not going to lie, this beauty tool has a special place in my makeup cabinet and I’m always looking forward to my night time thanks to this. Est. Lab’s triple action eye massager has a hot compress, LED red light therapy and sonic vibration for the ultimate pick-me-up. The upgraded sonic vibration now has three intensities (I use the highest) suited to your comfort level. This amps up blood circulation and minimises puffiness too. As for the LED red light therapy? It gives collagen regeneration a little nudge, improving skin elasticity and erasing fine lines along the way.

I particularly enjoy the relaxing hot compress which has nine different heat settings that go up to 45°C. It relieves fatigue around my eye contours and brightens dark circles. I’ve been using less under eye concealer so something’s definitely working! Oh, and did I mention that it only needs a minute for it to work its magic? L-O-V-E!

IRÉN Skin Skin Vaporizer

IRÉN Skin vaporizer
Photography: IRÉN Skin

This new discovery has elevated my entire skincare routine. Here’s the lowdown: IRÉN Skin’s Skin Vaporizer is a face spray that converts liquid skincare products into a fine nano mist for better absorption. I love how it coats my skin with an even layer of product that absorbs within seconds. Plus, I end up using less product than when I’m applying by hand, so that’s good news for my wallet! The zero-touch application also helps with preventing acne since there’s more bacteria on our hands than we think. And who needs a 10-step routine when you can combine multiple serums in this spray? (Just be sure to check the ingredients and avoid combining products like acids and vitamin C serums together.) Recently, I’ve been mixing hydrating and anti-blemish products to calm my skin. Whether you’re using serums from the same brand or others, this Skin Vaporizer works well. Simply mix, load and spritz away!

You can always count on Glow Recipe for fruity picks to add to your cocktail of skincare products. Joining the party is the Plum Plump Hyaluronic Serum, made with three types of plum (including the vitamin C-rich kakadu plum), hyaluronic acid and vegan collagen for glowing skin. This lightweight serum that absorbs quickly with a non-sticky finish. It layers well with the other skincare products that I use and helps to plump up my skin beautifully. The adorable plum-shaped bottle is a bonus!

Porcelain Hydraclear Gel

Porcelain Hydraclear Gel-beauty-reviews-singapore
Photography: Porcelain

I don’t know about you but I’ve been at zit’s end with my maskne… until now. First, a little backstory on how my stubborn acne works: pesky acne pops in like an uninvited guest. I spam some spot treatment, hoping for the best. They take forever to go away and leave a nasty dark spot… I recently discovered that benzoyl peroxide in some spot treatments can be too drying and may leave dark spots on the skin. No wonder I’ve got plenty!

The Hydraclear Gel from Porcelain has heroes like witch hazel extract (known for its antibacterial properties) and squalene (balances oil production). What does it do? Combats bacterial growth, reduces inflammation and regulates sebum levels. You can use it as a moisturiser or if you have acne-ridden skin like me, just apply it as a spot treatment. I put it on inflamed zits and voila! The red bumps have drastically shriveled, and the redness is almost gone.

Fenty Skin Flash Nap Revival Eye Gel-Cream + Eye Massage Tool

Fenty Skin Flash Nap
Photography: Fenty Skin

Fake a flash nap with Fenty Skin’s Flash Nap Revival Eye Gel-Cream. This two-in-one eye cream plus primer has been a skincare staple for me since the day I got it. Heavy eye creams don’t usually work with my skin, so I was pleasantly surprised by how this one is relatively light while providing sufficient nourishment. It’s made with horse chestnut for de-puffing, hyaluronic acid for hydration, Persian silk tree for anti-aging and green tea for a dose of antioxidants. I use it with the eye massage tool and it visibly de-puffs my eyes. At the same time, this cream helps set a smooth base for makeup application. Plus, it’s completely cruelty-free and comes in a recyclable box. Using this eye cream with the cooling eye massage tool has definitely brightened up my morning routine – and my eyes!

Tata Harper Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer

Tata Harper Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer beauty-review-singapore
Photography: Tata Harper

I thought I was going to be obsessed with this product. After all, Tata Harper is known to be one of the most popular natural luxury skincare brands around. First things, first – the scent. It’s not the most pleasant but if the strong, earthy smell of cut grass is a deal-breaker, then this is not for you. It’s not all bad though. Just one to two pumps is enough for a hydration boost. The formula is not sticky and absorbs into the skin nicely. It does its job but I’m not sure if it’s worth the steep price point.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Iced Out Highlighter

 Anastasia Beverly Hills
Photography: Anastasia Beverly Hills

If you think the luxe rose gold compact is stunning, wait till you see how it applies on the skin! ABH’s Iced Out Highlighter comes in a pressed powder formula that melts into the skin for a golden glow (it delivers a warmer sheen than you’d expect from seeing it in the pan). A vegan and cruelty-free highlighter, use it on your lids for a ‘wet’ eyeshadow look, on your cheek and brow bones as a conventional highlight, or dust it all over underneath your foundation for that lit-from-within effect. If you’re after a subtle look, use it sparingly as the pigmentation is real with this one. Want some serious strobing action? You can also use it with a wet brush to up the intensity. This highlighter will look beautiful either way – and it lasts all day, too.

Grail Do-It-All sheet mask

They didn’t take it lightly when they named this mask. Aptly called Do-It-All, this multi-tasking mask is soaked in a nutrition-packed formula with over 29 ingredients like Japanese sea green caviar, Icelandic chamomile and copper tripeptide; to brighten the skin, treat pigmentation, combat aging and tighten pores. The mask fits like a glove thanks to its stretchy regenerated nano filament material (the world’s only, too!). I love how my face felt plump and hydrated after using the mask for a good 20 minutes or so. Plus, the mask is made from biodegradable materials – another great step towards a conscious skincare journey.
Grail Do-It-All sheet mask, $42/box of 5, available online

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze

This popular brow styling wax was such a hit when it launched earlier this year, and for good reason. It’s a clear wax formula that’s suitable for all brow colours, providing serious hold and lasting power. Brush this on and your brows will stay in place until you remove it. The best part? It tamed unruly strands without that turning your brows ‘crispy’ or stiff. Now, I’m just hoping that the brand will release this wax with a brow tint formula… Psst: if you’re new to brow shaping or want to take your skills to the next level, the brand has just launched its Golden Ratio Brow App to help you achieve expert results.

Wander Beauty Double Date Eyeshadow Duo

Wander Beauty Double Date Eyeshadow Duo beauty-reviews-singapore
Photography: Wander Beauty

I’m all about minimalism when it comes to makeup (ATM at least). So this stacked eyeshadow pod – which I got first dibs on during Sephora’s spring press day event – has been a godsend. I like how the cream colour primes my oily lids and adds a flush of colour while the heavily-pigmented shimmer powder offers pizzazz. I’m trying out the First Kiss and ILYSM duo, a foil golden champagne with cream satin burnt terracotta colours. I use my fingers to dab on this vitamin E-rich and vegan product, using the built-in mirror during Grab rides to my destination. Easy, peasy.

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare

IT Cosmetics foundation + skincare
Photography: IT Cosmetics

Can foundation improve your skin from inside out? Apparently, yes. IT Cosmetics’ Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare is an innovative hybrid product that’s changing the beauty game. It literally makes your skin better, containing ingredients such as hepes acid for brightening, hyaluronic acid and aloe vera for hydration and vitamins E and B5 for free radical-fighting moisturisation. It’s not as high coverage as the Your Skin But Better CC Cream, but it’s buildable and definitely feels more hydrating than the former. It lasts well after setting with powder and feels comfortable throughout the day, without causing my skin to feel dry or flaky. I’d reach for this when I want some coverage while keeping my skin feeling happy.

Allies of Skin Molecular Saviour Probiotics Treatment Mist

Allies of Skin Molecular Saviour Probiotics Treatment Mist beauty review singapore
Photography: Allies of Skin

We’ve got a heavy duty mist right here! Take notes ‘cos this facial mist is bangin’. The mist immediately gives life to my tired, dull skin thanks to a blend of probiotics, niacinamide and restorative nutrients; as well as antioxidants such as silk amino acids, zinc PCA, and acai berry. It’s also got a cool anti-evaporation molecule that clings on to your skin cells. I find the mist to be slightly on the heavier side and it also gives an oily sheen on my face. So I used it on WFH days which is perfect due to all the nasty blue light exposure from my screen.

Ange Gardien Paris Matte for Glitter lipsticks

 Ange Gardien Paris
Photography: Ange Gardien Paris

Pucker up: Ange Gardien Paris is commemorating International Women’s Day with limited edition Matte for Glitter lipsticks and boy, are they a treat. I love that the brand made these in two classic shades: a red (Scarlet Rouge) and a taupe (Kiss Bliss). The design of the case is inspired by “The Kiss” sculpture by Constantin Brancusi, celebrating human connections in a time of social distancing. Twist up for a seriously glittery bullet (it’s even more stunning IRL!) and beautiful pigmentation.

At once shimmery and matte, the formula is long-lasting, with Acacia peptide for all-day hydration. It’s also free from animal derivatives, parabens and sulfates, which is a plus. I like the solid colour payoff, plus the dash of glitter that adds interest to the usual matte lip. It requires touch ups after meals, but transfers less than the usual lippy, especially if you blot it slightly after application. Scarlet Rouge is my fave – this red lippy never fails to perk up my complexion even when I don’t have any other makeup on!

Glow Recipe Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm

Glow Recipe Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm
Photography: Glow Recipe

If I had to pick one new favourite beauty product of the month, this is it. Ever since the whole maskne conundrum, I’ve been super paranoid about removing every single bit of makeup and nasties before bedtime – yup, even if I have to drag my butt to the toilet after a tiring day. This cleansing balm makes my routine 100 times easier (not exaggerating) by melting away even the most heavy-duty mascara and eyeliner in seconds.

The sorbet-like texture contains papaya enzymes, papaya seed oil and blueberry extract to resurface the skin, keep it hydrated and guard it against environmental stressors. I also love the sweet bubble gum scent – don’t worry, it smells nothing like papaya if you’re not into that. A little goes a long way so there’s no doubt this 100ml jar is going to last you a long time.

Re:Erth Smoothing Eye Cream

Re-Erth Smoothing Eye Cream
Photography: Re:Erth

It’s serious business starting on a new eye cream so securing a good one is crucial. I’ve been using local skincare brand Re:Erth’s smoothing eye cream for a month or so. The pluses – I love the lightweight texture. I just dab the product around the eyes and it absorbs right into the skin. My puffy under-eyes have improved too. It’s probably due to the mix of water-soluble vitamin A and moisture-locking colostrum (aka mother’s milk from Danish cows) that decreases fluid retention.

I also notice a slight lift around my eye contour. As for my crow’s feet? They’re still creeping around. I’ll probably need more time to assess that. Oh, and I also found out recently that the eye cream can be used on smile lines as well. Will have to remember this step henceforth!
Re:Erth Smoothing Eye Cream, $99, available online or at multiple locations including Design Orchard, Tangs Orchard and TheAC

One/Size Secure The Blur Makeup Magnet Primer

First things first, I have to give an A-plus to the texture of this primer – it’s non-greasy and mattifies my oily spots almost immediately. I have visible pores around my t-zone area but it magically vanished when I patted this bad boy on. Overall, it ticks all the right boxes for a great primer for oily or combination skin but I’ve seen many others that do the same too…
One/Size Secure The Blur Makeup Magnet Primer, $48, available at Sephora

Natasha Moor No Bag Vibes Concealer

My sleep schedule is beyond messed up – but the world doesn’t need to know that. Enter this colour-correcting concealer stick, the ultimate trickster for dark under-eye circles. Brown people, don’t be afraid of the bright orange hue. Just apply on darker spots (I use it around my nose bridge and the corners of my mouth too), blend it out and apply concealer. You’ll notice the difference immediately. Go one step further and pat it on your cheeks for a warm coral blush. A definite win in my books. However, it might be too harsh for lighter skin tones.
Natasha Moor No Bag Vibes Concealer, $45, available at Sephora

Kundal Honey & Macadamia Nature Shampoo – Ylang Ylang

The first thing that’ll reel you in is the scent. That’s right, Kundal’s Honey and Macadamia Ylang Ylang shampoo has a calming floral scent, but it’s never overpowering. After all, it contains 32 different natural extracts. It also helps to balance pH levels too. After air-drying, my hair looks silky, smooth and nourished. It’s slightly drier on blow-drying days but nothing a good anti-frizz hair oil can’t fix.
Kundal Honey & Macadamia Nature Shampoo – Ylang Ylang, $10.50, available at Guardian, iHerb and Shopee

Honest beauty reviews: January 2021

Farmacy Very Cherry Bright Vitamin C serum

This vitamin C serum from the clean and cruelty-free brand has a potent combo with four forms of vitamin C (15% derived from Acerola cherry) and hyaluronic acid each. You just know it’s going to do wonders. It has a gel-like consistency that sinks into my skin. New dark spots have slowly diminished and I do see a natural glow. Plus points for the cherry scent!
Farmacy Very Cherry Bright Vitamin C serum, $95, available at Sephora

Pixi +C Vit Lip Brightener

I love a lip balm that has multiple functions in one. This vitamin C-infused nifty stick from Pixi is moisturising and adds a natural rosy tint to your lips. Good enough for me. The jojoba seed oil and vitamin E also softens and nourishes my chapped lips. Speaking of which, remember the slight rosy tint I mentioned? The colour sometimes clumps onto chapped areas so it’s best to use a lip scrub beforehand.
Pixi +C Vit Lip Brightener, $16, available at Sephora, LookFantastic and Lazada

Chantecaille Future Skin Cushion Foundation

Chantecaille Future Skin Cushion Skincare Foundation | best beauty buys 2021
Photography: Chantecaille

This water-based foundation is heavy on its benefits (infused with anti-ageing and anti-pollution skincare) but light on the formula. I love how cushion foundations give the no makeup, makeup look and this is no different. The buildable coverage blurs imperfections and gives a flawless finish. I received a lighter shade for my skin tone so I use it on areas that need highlighting. As for the range? Fret not, as deeper shades will be arriving next month! Maybe it’s one of my new year resolutions to be frugal but I definitely can’t ignore that hefty price tag though…
Chantecaille Future Skin Cushion Foundation, $195, available at Tangs at Tang Plaza and Takashimaya D.S

Porcelain HA+ Hydrating Serum

You gotta love a great hydrating serum. In fact, if it’s not part of your daily skincare routine, best you add one ASAP. The local skincare brand’s HA+ Hydrating Serum has a stellar mix of ingredients that counteract signs of ageing, increases cellular moisture and prevents breakouts. The water-based serum is great for layering and pairs well with our serums. I’m dreading the fact that my bottle is finishing soon.

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Moisture Superfood Mask

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Moisture Superfood Mask | best beauty buys 2021
Photography: Briogeo

I’ve been a big fan ever since Briogeo launched in Singapore (we even had a chat with the founder!). So I’m always all ears for new stuff from this plant-based and naturally-derived haircare brand. This protein-free hair mask leaves my parched and frizzy hair smooth, silky and shiny. I’m guessing it’s thanks to conditioning ingredients like avocado oil, kiwi fruit extract and spinach. I slather it on my ends after shampooing once or twice a week. Feel free to skip the conditioner on mask days.

Nudestix Magnetic Luminous Eye Color

Nudestix Magnetic Luminous Eye Color
Photography: Nudestix via Facebook

Pardon the exaggeration but we’ve got a life-changer here. This magical eye cream pencil has been a staple in my makeup routine ever since the first try. I usually save eye shadow for bigger events but thanks to its convenience, I’d use it every day. The luminous eye colour gives major colour payoff with just a few swipes. Don’t be fooled by the creamy formula as this baby doesn’t budge. So much so that it’s best to blend immediately after applying on each eyelid. I like to use my fingers for this. Oh, and remember to prime and set the eyelids! The formula tends to crease on oilier lids. No doubt, one of the best beauty buys of the month!
