Travel may have been a distant dream in 2020, but things are perking up in 2021. As the Covid-19 situation in Hong Kong improves, the suspended Singapore-Hong Kong travel bubble may actually launch (finally!). And now, it looks like Singapore is in talks with Australia on a possible air travel bubble happening this year. Read on for all the deets…

1. No quarantine!

Both countries are considering a travel bubble that will allow residents from Singapore and Australia to journey between the two without quarantine requirements. Because both countries have the pandemic relatively under control, our Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) is keen to cooperate in reopening the economies of both sides.

2. A mid-year vacay, perhaps?

If it all works out, the bubble can potentially launch as soon as July 2021. That means vaccinated travellers may be able to go to Australia easily for work, study or just a much-needed vacation.

3. Vaccinations and priority travel

According to the MFA, these discussions don’t involve the concept of a quarantine centre or vaccination hub. But, they do include deliberations on the mutual recognition of vaccination certificates, as well as priority travel for certain groups of people, including students and business travellers.

4. The current situation

Singapore’s border is already open to a few countries where Covid-19 is under control (including Australia). And Australia has a one-way travel bubble with New Zealand, where Kiwis can visit its country without quarantine, although the initiative has been put on pause a couple of times as outbreaks occur. But, a travel bubble between Singapore and Australia will allow for easier access between the two, as travellers likely won’t have to worry about the two-week quarantine.

So keep your chin up, travel enthusiasts! We may have some light at the end of the stay-home situation soon.
