Shampoo, conditioner, and if we’re slightly more diligent, some moisturizing oil or serum for extra shine and hydration.
We’re shame-faced to admit that that’s about the full extent of our hair routine, until we decided to put the big boys to the test. We’ve heard plenty about scalp and hair treatments, but do they really work? And are they worth our heard-earned money? We put our damaged journo tresses to the test.
Hair & Scalp Treatment at J’s Salon
Impressive doesn’t even begin to cut it. Located at Grand Copthorne Waterfornt Hotel, J’s Salon has a stunning view of the riverfront – and its interiors aren’t shabby either. Faux carpet grass underfoot, lush wall-to-wall greenery (all fake of course, but coulda fooled us!), and sleek white furniture are just the tip of this ace salon. There’s also a Gryphon tea bar (though we like their off-the-menu red date tea), complimentary robes and slippers, and even fresh cookies lest your 2 hour treatment proves too much for your stomach to handle.
The process: The treatment begins with a thorough scalp analysis, which, if you’re unaccustomed to, can be both gross and entirely captivating. Once they’ve checked out the condition of your scalp and hair, they prescribe a four-step treatment – all using Kersatase products. You’re then ushered into the luxurious hair spa and treated to 2hours worth of massages (from scalp to fingers), hair masks, ultra-hydrating products, and incredibly complex machines which help your hair soak up all that goodness. The royal treatment finishes with an impeccable wash and blow.
Our verdict: Was there a visible difference? Definitely But as we all know, the true test is after you wash your hair – and to our delight our hair was noticeably softer, smoother, and get this – less frizzy! Scalp treatments are important for maintaining healthy hair and it’s recommended that you get a treatment once every 4-6 weeks, depending on the condition of your hair.
The great draw: Honeycombers readers get an exclusive $50 off the scalp and hair treatment. We recommended Ting Ting (Instutite Manager) or Maya.
J’s Salon, 392 Havelock Road, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Level 3, Singapore 169663, p. 6733 3882/ 6476 3288. Open daily 10am-10pm.
Customised Hyaluronic + Keratin treatment at Hairloom
While Hairloom doesn’t have the super luxe intriors of J’s Salon, the team at Hairloom is plenty experienced and have worked with many local celebs on both hair and make-up. Hairloom offers two kinds of hair treatments – the hyaluronic treatment and a keratin one. Hyaluronic acid (yes the same one used in fillers) works to control frizz while keratin strengthens from within. Ask for Reno – he’s extremely knowledgeable, observant, and affable.
The process: We begin with a clarifying shampoo to thoroughly cleanse our hair. After a rinse (and deeply relaxing scalp massage), the treatment is applied to the hair in sections. A mere 20 minutes later, all that goodness is absorbed and we’re ready for a wash before a blow-dry.
Our Verdict: The outcome of smooth, stronger, and frizz-free hair is not only immediately visible, it lasts. What we like best is the unpretentious atmosphere where you feel immediately comfortable and welcome. Great for rookies!
The great draw: Want to experience it for yourselves? Honeycombers readers get 30% off the treatments, just say we sent you.
