If there’s anything the pandemic has taught us, it’s that human connection is one of the most important things in life. We may be kept apart with social distancing, but our relationships are what tide us through tough times. Enter The Sound Inside, a play by Singapore Repertory Theatre. Mental health, solitude and human connection are at the core of its message, making it more relevant now than ever. Keen to find out more? Read on for all the deets…

This Broadway drama gets the Singaporean treatment

In case you haven’t heard, The Sound Inside is one of Broadway’s hottest new plays by award-winning playwright Adam Rapp. It’s staged by Singapore Repertory Theatre to kick off its 2021 season. The production comes after SRT reopened in November 2020 featuring Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie. So if you’ve missed watching live shows over the past year, here’s your chance to get all caught up. Psst: the theatre’s all about social distancing, limited audience numbers and disinfection before and after every performance, so you have nothing to worry about!

It dives into a meaningful connection between two people

At the heart of this two-hander (it only has two main characters) is the relationship between Bella Bird, played by Serene Chen, and Christopher John, played by Krish Natarajan. Bella is an Ivy League university professor who cherishes her fortress of solitude, while Christopher is a brilliant, enigmatic student. Both are labelled as social misfits, yet they find a way to bond with one another when Bella is confronted by a challenge she can’t overcome alone.

Unpredictable with twists at every corner, the compelling drama tackles the question of what one person can do for another. More than just a play about two lonely people, it’s a story that focuses on the connection between two people who are alone. Tip: keep an eye out for how that profound connection unfolds and helps them both.
