Let’s be real, the worlds of art and science tend to favour men. How often do you see a revered artwork by a female artist spotlighted in the hallowed halls of a museum? Heck, even the famous Mona Lisa was painted by a man. While we cherish the Monets and Van Goghs of the world, we shouldn’t forget the wonderful contributions from women. So for the month of November, ArtScience Museum is showcasing the amazing women of art and science through a series of onsite and online programmes. Learn about these women’s passions and works as they step out of the sidelines of a patriarchal society. Say it with us: Who run the world? Girls.
Women of art and science take centre stage
There’s no limit to what women such as Ruth Asawa, Anna Campbell Bliss and Hilma af Klint can do. They have defied all expectations to rise up in their industries, and for that we salute them. Keen to find out their stories? ArtScience on Screen: New Ways of Seeing is showcasing a trio of films focusing on these female artists who have made their mark in the world. Traversing the fields of art, science, mathematics and technology, each film is an intimate portrayal of pushing creative boundaries and offering new perspectives in art history.
For instance, the Singapore premiere of Beyond the Visible – Hilma af Klint (2019) takes a closer look at the titular Swedish artist whose works were only appreciated almost 70 years after her death. In a time where women lived in the shadows of men, her abstract pieces had no place in the art world. Instead, she was deemed as a spiritual witch. For art enthusiasts, it will be a revelation to know her works predate the great Wassily Kandinsky, who was considered to be the pioneer of abstract art. Psst: Admission is free for all screenings! But due to limited capacity, make sure you pre-book your seats online.

That’s not all! For the homebodies, you can get your fill of art with ArtScience Late at Home. The November edition presents a performative work by Tania De Rozario, Marylyn Tan and Natalie Wang on 19 November. Watch these writers breathe life to their works by portraying what it means to be a woman in this day and age. Plus, there’ll be a live Q&A session for those who want to take a deep dive into their literary works.
Get interactive and hands-on

For those who have a knack for all things crafty, dive into some DIY action at the architecture-inspired pop-up card online workshop. Using the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid’s designs as inspiration, you will learn how to make a pop-up card featuring her distinctive style of sweeping contours and circular forms. You can totally use your newfound skills to decorate your room with artworks or even send funky greeting cards on festive occasions!

To wrap it all up, walk down memory lane as museum ambassador, Marilia, looks back at all the past exhibitions featuring works of powerful women who have contributed to the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. It’s pretty neat! Join the virtual tour on 27 November to be inspired by Tu Youyou, Professor Nadia Thalmann, Valentina Tereshkova, Mona Hatoum and Monika Lelonek. Oh, and who remembers Nadine, the social robot who graced the museum in 2017?
So whether you’re a seasoned culture vulture or looking to dip your toes in the art world, the Women of Art and Science programme has something for everyone.
