Now that we’re donning masks every time we step outside, have you ever wondered about the environmental impact? Or the single-use plastic that comes with every food delivery? Explore these questions at Planet or Plastic? a photography exhibition by National Geographic, open now at ArtScience Museum.

Planet or Plastic?

Did you know: 1,000,000,000,000 plastic bags are used worldwide every year? That’s 1 trillion! National Geographic has a global initiative that aims to reduce the volume of single-use plastic reaching our oceans. Building on this initiative, the Planet or Plastic? exhibition spotlights the problem caused by the proliferation of plastic consumption. Expect to see over 70 striking and thought-provoking images from international photographers that’ll inspire you to ditch your single-use cups for good!

These powerful scenes tell the story of plastic, from its invention to its mass consumption today. See how the global plastic crisis has impacted us and our environment – particularly our oceans. All’s not lost though! Take a look at how individuals and communities are finding innovative solutions to these problems. As the saying goes, an image speaks a thousand words – and we have no doubt you’ll be thinking about plastic and its effects on the globe long after visiting.

Trace the history of plastic, from its invention 150 years ago, to its uses in modern medicine and more. The first section of the exhibition showcases how plastic products were initially welcomed into our homes and how plastics to this day are used in crisis situations, to transport fresh water to areas hit by drought, for example. The second section looks into the darker side of plastics – how it negatively affects marine life. Following this, the third part brings to light the problem of plastic pollution with beautiful and seductive artworks (made from plastic) that draw you in only to reveal the unpleasant truth.

But it’s not all doom and gloom! The second half of the exhibition features citizen-led campaigns and new technologies created to counter this global problem. In the final section, you’ll journey through an interactive challenge using a “feet-first” approach and encounter infographics that reveal the consequences of increased use of disposable masks. You’ll likely end up reaching a powerful, self-reflective conclusion, so make it all the way till the end, we say. No spoilers here!
