Oh 2020, you sh*tty year. We’re still recuperating from the sad news of Matter’s closure. It’s the end of an era, people! The folks from the homebred sustainable label have decided to close this chapter for now – but they’re not leaving without a bang. Besides having an ongoing sale online, they’ve also announced new launches and styles. Plus, look out for an exciting collab with local artists and muralists Estella Ng and Liquan Liew of Ripple Root, before they bid farewell sometime in December 2020.
First look: Matter x Ripple Root collection
A year in the making, the nine-piece capsule collection launched on 27 August and will be available for pre-orders until 17 September. It’s also Matter’s first crowdfunding project! Whether or not the collection comes to fruition lies in our hands. The pieces will go into production once they’ve hit the minimum order quantities and you’ll get your hands on them from Spring 2021.
The collection: Traditional batik motifs reinterpreted in signature styles
One look at the collection and we easily know it’s going to be a hit. True to Ripple Root’s signature squiggly strokes and fun motifs, the series is inspired by traditional batik motifs and their love for Southeast Asian ornamentation. Think wearable art in the form of Matter’s resort shirt, all day romper and jumpsuit, square top, lounge lunghi, classic wide leg pants and cotton voile scarf.
Three vivid prints encompass the collection. Kingdom (our favourite) is a beautiful chaos of tropical, whimsical and botanical prints finished in Ripple Root’s iconic “painterly strokes and usual jazzy rhythm”. Ardent fans of the artists will know that birds and flowers are a central theme in all their designs. So it’s no surprise to see the Claw print in the mix but with a Hawaiian, resort-style treatment. Finally, Step (pictured above, right) is perfect for those who love subtle surprises – it’s a take on the classic pinstripe with a geometric ladder motif. Cue Sharpay Evans, ‘cos we want it all.
The Matter x Ripple Root collection retails from $41.30. Pre-orders are available until 17 September and will go into production once orders hit the minimum quantity.
