Top shows to binge-watch
Good Girls

Feeling down? Let these three suburbian mothers – Beth, Annie and Ruby – take you a zany journey through three seasons of shenanigans. Wanting a quick-fix to their financial woes, they decide to rob a grocery store but soon find themselves in a hilarious minefield of thugs, murder and money laundering. The plot alone might seem a little exaggerated, but that’s what good TV is all about, right?

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay
This year, we’ve seen a slew of K-dramas that have taken the TV world by storm, and joining the list is this newcomer. It follows the lives of Moon Gang-tae, a community health worker at a psych ward, and Ko Moon-young, a children’s book author who happens to suffer from an antisocial personality disorder. Along the way, they help heal each other and confront their past. The show falls in the romance-fantasy genre but it tackles heavy topics like mental health and trauma in a way that injects a sense of relatability to the plot.

Carnival Row

Set in a Victorian era where there exists great tension between human beings and mystical immigrant creatures, Carnival Row tells a forbidden love story. A fairy falls for a police inspector amidst political unrest and a wave of slayings by a ripper. Look past the fantasy tropes and you will see the show draws parallels to real-life issues like xenophobia and the global refugee crisis. Not to mention, the star-crossed lovers are played by Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom.

Indian Matchmaking
First of all, we would like to thank matchmaker Sima Taparia for being an inspiration for a wave of memes that have drowned social media. This (at times problematic) reality TV show gives viewers a glimpse into the world of arranged marriages in the Indian community. It’s cringe-worthy at parts, but if you’re looking for easy entertainment, let Taparia offer you some comic relief.

I May Destroy You
After creating and starring in the hilarious series Chewing Gum, Michaela Coel offers up another gem of a show, which has received numerous praises. Using her real-life experience, she plays a successful writer, Arabella Essiedu, who is finding the path of recovery after a rape incident. At its core, I May Destroy You is a story about sexual assault and the trauma that comes with it. We must say, Coel delivers these taboo topics in the most honest way possible.

The Umbrella Academy

The dysfunctional family of superheroes is back for a second season. This show takes off exactly where the cliff-hanger season finale left us. We dare say it’s a tad slow at first but the plot picks up towards the end. We don’t want to spoil it for you, so all we can say is, expect lots of time travelling fun that may or may not affect the timelines of the Hargreeves family.

Goliath
This legal drama follows the life of Billy McBride, a hotshot lawyer who is now a day-drinking divorcee living out of a hotel room. That soon changes as he is approached to help with a wrongful death lawsuit. What’s the plot twist? He’s going up against his old law firm, which he co-founded. With the odds stacked against him, he tries to find some much-needed justice for a case that could change his career trajectory.

Lovecraft Country

Based on the novel of the same name (which draws from horror fictional works of the late H.P. Lovecraft), the show takes you back to 1950s America during the era of the Jim Crow laws. Follow black Korean War veteran, Atticus Black, as he goes on a road trip with his friends to find his missing dad. The journey is far from smooth as they face the horrors of racism and the supernatural.

Ocean’s 8
What happens when you gather a group of female Hollywood heavyweights into one room? (We’re talking about Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Awkwafina and Helena Bonham Carter.) You get a fabulous heist at the glitzy Met Gala. This spin-off from the Ocean’s trilogy might have gotten mixed reviews but we can’t deny the infectious chemistry between these actresses. It’s comedy gold!

Aggretsuko

Meet Retsuko. She is a millennial red panda trying to figure out adulthood while being mistreated by her monster of a boss – who is a chauvinistic pig in the literal sense! What’s her solace? She lets her frustration out by singing heavy death metal songs in a karaoke bar. Watch her as she journeys through the 9-to-5 life with her colleagues, puts up with her overbearing mum and tries to find Mr Right. Who would have thought an anthropomorphic character would be so relatable? Plus, each episode is only around 15 minutes – perfect if you’re in the mood to binge-watch.
