Top shows to binge-watch
Unsolved Mysteries
Calling all true-crime junkies! After a decade of hiatus, Unsolved Mysteries has finally found a new home on Netflix. Like most documentaries from this genre, each episode presents a cold case through reenactments, interviews of the victim’s loved ones and evidence from eyewitnesses. As the title suggests, there is no resounding conclusion at the end… which will leave you on the edge of your seat. Did we mention there’s a case involving a possible UFO abduction?

His Dark Materials
Based on the novel series of the same name by Phillip Pullman, this show follows the journey of Lyra Belacqua as she embarks on a search for her kidnapped friend. Along the way, she unravels something far sinister. Apart from the intriguing plot, you will be fascinated by the multiverse created by Pullman. For starters, every human has a daemon partner, which is essentially an animal incarnation of the human’s soul.

Bulbbul

Set in early nineteenth century Bengal, Bulbbul follows the harrowing tale of a child bride, who is stripped of her childhood and married to a man (Rahul Bose) decades older. She grows attached to her husband’s youngest brother (Avinash Tiwary) as they’re both about the same age. As they travel back to her matrimonial home, the brother shares a folklore about a blood-thirsty demon woman with twisted feet who lives in the forest. Fast forward 20 years, and the brother returns from furthering his studies in London. He is welcomed by a grown-up, level-headed Bulbbul (Tripti Dimri), who is now the head of the house and no longer the shy, timid girl he once knew. Although the movie is labelled as a supernatural horror-drama, it highlights real issues such as child marriage and rape. Plus points for the stunning visuals and costumes, and the amazing performance by the lead.

Grey’s Anatomy
Ever thought of joining the fandom of Grey’s Anatomy? Well, come 25 July, you can start binge-watching all 15 seasons in their full glory. The show starts off with five medical interns going through the motions of life, from treating patients to dealing with their personal issues and finding love in on-call rooms. A word of caution: Don’t get too attached to the characters. Just have a box of tissues at hand for extra measure.

Euphoria
Don’t be too quick to dismiss this show as another teen drama. NO OTT plots here (we’re giving the side-eye to Riverdale). In the vein of the widely popular British series Skins, the plot focuses on a group of high school kids maneuvring through a maze of sex, drugs and love in today’s age of social media. Plus, if you’re in need of beauty inspiration, the show has a slew of beauty moments. We’re talking about glitter-packed eye shadows and crystal-studded eyelids.

The Babysitters Club

If you grew up reading this fabulous series, get ready for a wave of nostalgia. Netflix’s rendition of The Babysitters Club is honest, celebrates diversity and even deals with issues such as transphobia. The cast is brilliant – though we did feel old when we saw actress Alicia Silverstone playing a mum on the show.

Little Fires Everywhere
Welcome to the idyllic suburban town of Shaker Heights. This show is set in the 90s, where everything seems quaint and cheery until Mia Warren and her daughter move into the neighbourhood. The series gives you family drama, racial tension and follows two complex queer characters. One of them is struggling to come out while the other is running away from her past. Plus, the strong leading ladies of the show are Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon. What’s not to love?

The Nanny

What happens when a street smart and outspoken woman from Queens becomes a nanny for three children from New York/British high society? Hilarity ensues. This popular 90s sitcom brings back fond memories and is perfect for an easy rewatch. Expect all-round laughs thanks to Fran Fine (Fran Drescher), Niles (Daniel Davis) the witty butler, and the rest of the clan. Who can forget Fran’s alarmingly loud nasal voice and fab fashion sense?

Dark
Ever since the premiere of the final season, Dark has been gaining popularity and with good reason. The plot is enough to pique our curiosity. This trilogy revolves around four families in a small German town of Winden. With time travel thrown into the mix, the storyline goes back and forth, from 1888 and 1987 to 2020 and 2053. It might seem confusing on the surface, but fans have mentioned that once you start, you’ll be sucked into a sinister world.
