We’re at the halfway point of 2020 and we can safely say, “What a year it has been!” While we’re slowly getting used to the new normal (aka Phase 2), life still goes on. So we’ve sussed out the best things to do in July, with a good mix of offline and online events. Highlights include checking out reopened attractions like the zoo, museums and more!

Culture: Get your literature fix

From 1 July
Yay! Public libraries will open their doors to avid readers from 1 July. Make your way to one of the many state-of-the-art libraries across the island and snag a book (or two) of your choice. Need a little inspiration? Our book club has you covered.

Outdoors: Into the wild

From 4 July

Miss the wildlife of Singapore? No, we’re not talking about the uber-cute otters. The parks of Wildlife Reserves Singapore (River Safari, Jurong Bird Park and Singapore Zoo) will be welcoming back the public at 25% capacity from 6 July. Those wanting to marvel at the wonders of the sea can stop by the S.E.A. Aquarium, which will reopen from 4 July. Psst: Getting your tickets online is mandatory now.

Workshop: Step Inside: Documenting our Interior Journey in an Unusual Time

3–5 July
As we live in uncertain times, self-care is more important now than ever. Join local author Melissa De Silva in an online series of three sessions, as part of The Arts House’s Write From Home (WFH) Workshops. She’ll guide you on a cathartic writing journey to deal with your feelings from isolation. Let’s speak self-care into existence!

Art: StoryFest Online 2020

17–27 July
The annual storytelling festival is back this year with a slew of virtual events. Revisit ancient tales through A Dance of Stories and The Heart of Story, learn the healing properties of mandala with art therapist Chan Shu Yin, and take a closer look at the craft of story slam in an interview with the founder of What’s Your Story Slam, Anna Ong.

All month

Fans of the beloved local stage performance Emily of Emerald Hill can watch Margaret Chan’s version in the comfort of home. On top of that, theatre geeks can show off their acting chops by submitting their interpretation of Emily based on five iconic passages from the play. Fun stuff, we tell you.

For the month of July, Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) is bringing you fun-filled music events behind the screen. Activities range from a workshop by Grammy Award-winner Jacob Collier to a cover of the iconic Singaporean song, “One People, One Nation, One Singapore” by the folks from Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Plus, a curated Spotify playlist by none other than SIFA artists.

Feed your soul with an eclectic mix of art at Cuturi Gallery. Showcasing local and international artists alike, the exhibition aims to offer an alternative way of viewing art through a collection, including the Space Shuttle (pictured above) by Belgian artist Delphine Rama, which draws inspiration from the convergence of fashion and architecture. Time to get that vitamin D!

We won’t be travelling anytime soon, so the great outdoors of Singapore has to satisfy our itch for adventure. Explore the garden city, one park at a time – that includes the hidden green spots in every nook and cranny. For those yearning for an island vacay, grab your swimmers and head to one of the many pristine beaches or public swimming pools across the city.
