It’s times like these that can bring out the best or worst in people. And thankfully, we’ve seen so many amazing campaigns and initiatives set up for the community to help one another. From platforms that support local businesses to ground-up movements lending a hand to neighbours, there are plenty of ways to get involved, give back, and pay it forward. Besides delivering surprise meals and care packages to your loved ones, you can stretch beyond your immediate circle to aid those in need – or show appreciation for individuals on the frontline. These restaurants are already doing it.

Sum Yi Tai

Help a neighbour during this time of crisis by purchasing $25 cash vouchers from the Cantonese joint. These won’t expire and can be used for delivery right now or dine-in dishes when the circuit breaker is lifted. For every voucher, Sum Yi Tai will donate a meal to The Food Bank Singapore for hungry families.

Chao Chao Gyoza

Join the brand’s initiative to feed the children and employees of Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, as they are stuck indoors during the circuit breaker season. Simply pledge $5 to sponsor a bento box (worth $10-$12) and the Japanese restaurant will top up the rest.

The Peranakan

Its business may not be doing so well, but The Peranakan is still determined to feed healthcare heroes and the needy. So far, it has sent hundreds of bento boxes and bubble tea drinks to staff at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and The National Kidney Foundation, as well as the elderly living in rental flats at Lengkok Bahru and former Sungei Road Thieves’ Market vendors. To support the cause, adopt a bento at $5 (usual price $15) or bubble tea at $2 (usual price $5).

If you’d like to pay it forward, add a note in your order to indicate what you’d like to give. Larger donations can contact the eatery directly via email at hello@sixteenouncesbistro.com.

Lowercase will give away free Japanese rice bowls and flatbread pizza to its neighbouring residents in the area, donating one meal for every Family Bundle ($48) and two meals for every 73 platter ($88) sold. We may not be able to connect with these folks physically, but we can still warm their hearts by showing them a little love. Just give the cafe a heads up if you’d like to co-sponsor additional food as well ($5, usual price $10).
