The minimal fashion trend isn’t about to take a break, and neither is our move to a more sustainable wardrobe. Enter Muji’s Spring/Summer ‘20 linen collection: With clean lines and cool earthy tones, this range of comfy, timeless pieces is stylish and kind to the environment.

Linen is making a comeback

Spring has sprung and so has linen. Are we surprised? Not really. It is the perfect material to rock this breezy season. The miracle fabric has two contrasting qualities that we’re obsessed with: It’s soft to the touch yet sturdy, which means it won’t unravel after a few washes. Think of it as an investment piece that will be a permanent fixture in your wardrobe for years to come.

Fashion that’s functional and cool

Using fibres of the flax plant that are sourced from Normandy, France, all the menswear pieces are tailored to keep you cool in Singapore’s tropical climate. Muji’s linen is grown in climates that have great temperature shifts in transitioning from morning to night, which makes it highly absorbent and durable. The result? You’ll be saying au revoir to stuffy, rigid ensembles that make you break a sweat!

We’ve got our eyes on the new washed pullover short sleeve shirt (available in late March) that comes with a snap button on the collar. It’s all about the small details when it comes to minimalist fashion. And the best part is that it gets softer with every wash. Pair it with the French linen trousers for a relaxed look. But if you’re out and about on a sunny day, perhaps opt for the berms instead.

Got a party after work? Throw on the French linen coat (available in selected stores) to add a little fuss-free layering in your ensemble. Plus point: It comes with inner pockets – hello, functional fashion!

Easy, breezy style

The womenswear pieces are all about looking effortlessly chic, which is perfect for those busy mornings! How does Muji achieve the flowy, soft look of the fabric? Well, the secret is organic flax. Apart from sourcing French linen from Normandy, Muji has been working closely for years with the farmers from Xinjiang, China, to source top-notch organic linen for some of the womenswear pieces.

The crops are grown in a remote area, 1,800 metres above sea level, in the northern part of the Taklamakan Desert and the foot of the Tian Shan Mountain. These plants are blessed with fresh water from the melting snow and there are no pesky pests, which means no nasty pesticides and agricultural chemicals in the linen garments.

Now, on to lookbook-ready ensembles that will have you looking chic at your nine-to-five and when you hit the bars for after-work drinks. Pair the organic linen washed three-quarter sleeve blouse with a breezy gathered skirt for the ultimate cool-girl factor. Feeling lazy? Simply slip into the washed short sleeve dress (available in late March) for an instant style upgrade.

Who says you can’t make a statement with the minimalist trend? And no, we’re not talking about loud embellishments. The tiniest of details will do just fine, like stripes on the short sleeve dress or subtle pleats in the tuck skirt. Just complete your look with sleek accessories and you’re ready to go.
