To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

It’s been two years since the release of this lighthearted smash hit and we’re counting down the hours (as we write) till we see the super adorbs duo Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky back on screen. The first flick ended on a happy note, but now we’re seeing Lara Jean’s extremely charming ex-crush, John Ambrose McClaren, entering the picture. How will this new-age love triangle fare? We’ll just have to wait in anticipation as we sip on our “Korean yoghurt drink”.

Otherwise known as the history-making Hollywood hit that surfaced Singapore to the consciousness of movie-goers across the globe, this rom-com is adapted from Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name. Starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina and a long list of local actors, the plot essentially centres around a Chinese-American professor who visits her boyfriend’s home for the first time and gets the shock of her life when she discovers her down-to-earth partner comes from one of the richest families in Singapore. It’s an easy, fluffy watch, and you can always make things more interesting by downing a shot whenever Marina Bay Sands or some other local tourist landmark appears.

Marriage Story

Marriage isn’t a bed of roses and this award-winning film by Noah Baumbach proves it. Following the life of a soon-to-be-divorced couple, Charlie and Nicole Ryder Barber, the drama is a 137-minute portrait on what it means to split up and stay together as a “family” for the kids. Paired with voiceovers, flashbacks and superb acting by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, the movie shows the fragility of marriage without sugar-coating it. Great for anyone who doesn’t mind a bit of a reality check after the honeymoon period ends.

Now in its fourth season, this weepy, compelling family drama continues to pierce our hearts with its twists and turns, poignant storytelling and powerful take on relationships. Led by an ensemble cast that includes Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz, the award-winning series follows the lives of a family of twins and their adopted brother (all born on the same day), jumping back and forth between the past and present with flashbacks. If you and your boo are up for a rollercoaster ride of emotions, go ahead and binge on this. Just have a box of tissues at hand – you’ll be tearing up in no time.

What Men Want

For those who’ve seen What Women Want with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt in the early 00s, think of this as a remake of sorts. The ever-formidable Taraji P. Henson takes the lead as a successful, influential sports agent who misses out on a promotion at work because of her inability to relate to men (according to her boss). But things take a turn for the mysterious when she meets a psychic and starts to hear the private thoughts of men around her. Will she use her newfound powers for good? Will they change her life? The plot isn’t the most unpredictable, but Taraji easily steals every scene she’s in, making her a delight to watch.

Always Be My Maybe

The story revolves around childhood sweethearts who reconnect 15 years after their fallout. They soon realise there are still sparks between them, but their contrasting lifestyles keep them apart. Seems like any run-of-the-mill rom-com, but comedians Ali Wong and Randall Park keep things fresh, wacky and super sweet by inhabiting Asian culture in a subtle way and adding a touch of family sentiment that’ll make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Oh, and that cameo of a certain Keanu Reeves? Truly one of the funniest scenes we’ve seen in recent times.

Titanic

After 23 years, Titanic has finally made its way to Netflix on our shores. Swoon over 90s Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet in this epic romance movie where the titular ship meets her end… along with most of the passengers on board. When paired with the classic tune of “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion, it’ll likely keep you blubbering through it all and wondering whether you’ll ever experience a love as iconic (although tragic) as theirs.

Call Me By Your Name

This movie made waves in 2018, and in a way, we’d say it’s this decade’s version of Brokeback Mountain as it deals with similar themes. Set in Northern Italy in the 1980s, it follows two boys, 17-year-old Elio and 24-year-old Oliver, who happen to fall in love with each other. More heartbreaking than heartwarming, the flick explores the nuances of first love with stunning cinematography and music.

Ghost

This cult classic perfectly balances humour and drama with some iconic scenes thrown in. Who can forget that sensuous pottery scene or Whoopi Goldberg’s character, who allows Patrick Swayze to possess her body so he can have one final dance with Demi Moore! Alexa, play “Unchained Melody” as we reach out for tissues.

Someone Great

This one’s for all you anti-romantics. Gina Rodriguez breezes through this fairly real story of someone who’s fresh off a long-term relationship. The film shows some raw post-breakup moments as Gina’s character struggles to move on with the help of her girlfriends, played by Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise. We’re loving the fact that her besties aren’t just side characters too – they’re also thrown some challenging dilemmas. Prepare to ugly cry for this.

When a movie stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, you don’t ask questions – you just sit and watch. But the highlight of the show has to be Steve Carell’s portrayal of a newly divorced man who’s just trying to get his sh*t together. Even though some scenes are too good to be true – find us a relationship like Ryan and Emma! – the twist at the climax still has us laughing out loud.

Please Like Me

After watching the first episode, you can’t help but give in to the name and admit you like this Aussie comedy (although sometimes it’s more of a tragicomedy). It’s about a boy who, after being dumped by his girlfriend, realises he’s gay. Yep, it all sounds a tad campy but the show actually explores weighty issues like racism, homophobia and depression. If you ask us, it’s probably one of the most honest and funny productions out there.

The Big Sick

Comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, take a page out of their own love story for this romantic flick. The plot gets interesting after the characters break up when Emily (played by Zoe Kazan) mysteriously falls ill and is placed in a medically-induced coma. Her parents fly in to take care of their daughter, and Kumail’s character (who chooses to stay) soon develops a bond with them. Of course, things are exactly the same for Emily when she wakes up but it is a rom-com, after all, so you’d probably be able to guess the ending.

Ah, remember those days when Nicholas Sparks titles used to be at the top of our reading list? Yup, our generation is fondly familiar with phrases like “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird” or “You are, and always have been, my dream” thanks to this iconic film. Unpopular opinion: As much as we love Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdam’s sizzling chemistry, we have a soft spot for their older avatars. That last scene still gets us all choked up.

The Proposal

Pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds and comedy queen Sandra Bullock hit the mark in this hilarious rom-com. Yes, the situation is cringe-worthy: Tyrant boss forces her ambitious assistant to marry her in a desperate attempt to avoid deportation. The show, however, turns into a complete “aww-fest” when Bullock’s character cosies up to Reynold’s family and *surprise, surprise* falls in love with him.
