Exciting things to do this January: Art festivals, indie concerts and CNY happenings!

2019, who? We’re not looking back as 2020 promises to be even better… and if January is a prelude to what’s in store this year, we’re stoked! We’ve got cool concerts, art festivals and parties comin’ up – basically a constant supply of exciting things to do this month!

Art: Singapore Art Week

11 – 19 January
The eighth edition of Singapore Art Week is all set to take over popular neighbourhoods and drench them in art. Imagine nine thrilling days with over 100 art events across Singapore. Plot your life according to the calendar and hit up exhibits, talks, performances and other immersive activities.

Drink: The Nyetimber Secret Garden at 1880

Head over to 1880 as the space is transformed into a boozy garden, making way for English sparkling wine Nyetimber. Nyetimber Classic Cuvee and Rosé will be going by the glass and bottle, and no judgments if you choose the latter all for yourself.

Festival: Chinatown’s Chinese New Year 2020 celebrations

4 January – 2 February
Chinatown, once again, comes to life at this time of the year. Starting with the official light-up ceremony on 4 January, there’ll be loads to do this month, including a festive street bazaar, a lion dance competition, nightly stage performances and a heritage and food trail. While most of the activities end on 24 January, the Chingay floats will make an appearance on New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street on 2 February.

Eat: We Bare Bears X Kumoya pop-up cafe

4 January – 12 April
Love We Bare Bears? The cartoon trio will be taking over Kumoya Cafe till April! From the food to the decor, this is the first fully-themed We Bare Bears pop-up cafe in town, and fans can also look forward to exclusive merchandise up for grabs!

Film: Eating Animals

7 January

Are you on the Veganuary bandwagon? Head to our favourite indie theatre for the Singapore premiere screening of Eating Animals, based on the best-selling book by Jonathan Safran Foer. You’ll get to nibble on cruelty-free sushi before the movie and stick around for a panel discussion with industry experts on veganism.

Concert: Bon Iver Live

17 January
Indie fans need no introduction to Bon Iver, but if you’re living under a rock, just know that the band created the worldwide hit, “Skinny Love”.  They’ll be back this time ‘round to promote their new album, ““i,i”, so fingers crossed they’ll perform the classic track that was responsible for a gazillion cover versions.

Party: Ce La Vi presents DJ Jazzy Jeff

17 January
This rooftop club is all set to host a special guest. Known for his chart-topping collaboration with Will Smith on “Girls Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” and “Summertime”, hip-hop DJ Jazzy Jeff will be helming the decks all night.

Art: Aliwal Urban Art Festival

18 January
Kampong Glam is all set for the seventh edition of Aliwal Urban Art Festival. The line-up includes everything from alternative music and skateboarding to dance battles, live graffiti painting and even an alternative walking tour of Kampong Glam. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your shopping bag as there’ll be an art market with goodies from local indie artists.

Concert: Of Monsters and Men Fever Dream Tour

18 January
After making a comeback in 2019 with Fever Dream, Icelandic indie folk-pop band Of Monsters and Men will be stopping by our sunny shores for a one-day shindig at Fort Canning Green. Expect hits such as the critically-acclaimed “Alligator”, the first single from the band’s third studio album.

Party: Kampong Boogie presents Chinese New Year & Hip Hop!

25 January

Grab your friends for a fun reunion party at Kampong Boogie. You know the drill for this cool rooftop party – there’ll be eats, tipples and feel-good music by DJs Chunk, Suren and Alx to get you down to boogie.

Eat: Australia Day BBQ

26 January
Rooftop bar 1927 at Sofitel So Singapore is throwing a poolside bbq this Australia Day. There’ll be sausages and beef sliders, Little Creature beers, beer pong and Aussie radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 grooves keeping you company all afternoon.

Festival: Chingay Parade Singapore 2020

31 January – 1 February
One of the biggest street parades in Singapore is back! This year, the theme is “Colours in Harmony”, and it sees a dazzling display of lights, ethnic costumes, ginormous floats, cultural performances, fireworks and even flying dragons! Okay, so the flying dragons are actually remote-controlled gizmos, but who’s asking!
