Winter vacays are notoriously hard to prepare for, no thanks to meagre baggage allowance, limited outfit options and under (or over) estimation of the cold. Whether you’re hitting the slopes for a ski trip, hiking snow-capped mountains or exploring the streets of a chilly country, we’ve rounded up the stores in Singapore where you can pick up winter wear to keep you warm, toasty and stylishly layered.

Uniqlo

Everyone’s fave Japanese clothing brand offers the unthinkable: Affordable cashmere sweaters *gasp*. But if your winter wardrobe is calling out for more than super soft layers, stock up on leggings and long sleeved t-shirts from the Heat Tech and Ultra Light Down collections. Great for layering, these pieces are unbelievably lightweight and keep wearers warm without the overbearing thickness of usual winter woolies. Look out for two new products from the Ultra Light Down category: Ultra Light Down Cocoon Jacket for the ladies and Ultra Light Down Puffer Jacket for men. Let’s just say these super comfy jackets will keep you nice and warm.

Zara

The always bang on-trend Zara is naturally our source of stylish winter wear. The fall/winter collections are sheer perfection; you’ll find yourself knee-deep in spiffy, tailored trenches and IT-girl fleece-lined parkas. The men aren’t forgotten either as the brand constantly doles out classic parkas, duffies and military-inspired bomber jackets.

Decathlon

For moments when you have to pick function over style, this sportswear emporium has a fair share of winter wear gear to keep you warm without having to break the bank. Apart from stocking up on gym attire, you’ll find threads for hiking, trekking, skiing and snowboarding, along with handy accessories. Fair warning, Decathlon’s winter wear may not scream fall/winter fashion catalogue but if you’ve been through a European winter you know where your priorities lie.

Mango

One thing’s for sure, Mango breaks away from the stereotypical winter vacay wardrobe of pudgy windbreakers and ugly sweaters. What you get instead is a wardrobe upgrade of chic essentials and novel choices. Case in point: The autumn/winter collection accentuates a sophisticated version of chunky wool sweaters, plaid prints and winter maxi dresses for warmer days.

It’s basically timeless winter essentials meets a preppy aesthetic of vibrant reds, blacks and greens.

Pull & Bear

With a fair collection of elevated basics (for easy layering) to heavy-duty coats with faux shearling (for the ultimate protection), it’s hard to imagine how this brand was inspired by the Californian city of Palm Springs. Nonetheless, there’s even a full range of knitwear and outerwear in a bevy of textures, prints, colours and styles for you to play mix n’ match.

At Winter Time, the cold wear range doesn’t mess around. They’re unmistakably heavy-duty so don’t expect uber-stylish pieces for slouchy, street style ensembles. The range includes affordable must-haves from down parkas and ski jackets to trench coats and tights; you can easily snap up a couple of winter basics for under $200. Word of advice: Do your research on your destination’s weather so you don’t end up splurging on things you don’t need.

Designed for the savvy traveller, collections here rely on three simple principles: function, style and lightness. As for the lads, you can’t go wrong with the down jacket with faux fur collar and the black jacket with down gilet.

Sleek ski bunnies have to check out Moncler, which melds sports functionality with timeless style. Standouts of its women’s range include the ultralight down jackets in chic neutrals and field jackets with svelte silhouettes and nipped waists while men can keep comfy with padded down jackets and olive green parkas.

Timberland

Look beyond the extensive shoe racks at this sturdy boots behemoth and you’ll find yourself in winter (gear) wonderland. We don’t mean gritty, purely functional jackets a la Indiana Jones either; even the ladies will be pleasantly surprised to find racks of chic quilted vests, classic fluffy parkas and spiffy trench coats worthy of (Anna) Wintour.
