Don’t get your hopes up: there’s a grand total of 5 food trucks in Singapore. But this is a trend that has huge potential to grow – if the cards are played right.
Meet Kerbside Gourmet, the little truck with big aspirations. This one’s found at the National Museum of Singapore, and feeds everyone form schoolkids to hungry patrons and tourists. Better yet – it also feeds the less privileged through a “Buy One Give One” model, where each dish bough pays for another dish that goes to the needy. And ditch those notions of fast, greasy food – the menu here is all about real, good food. No MSG, no preservatives, and plenty of herbs – they even have their own onsite herb garden!
Follow them on Facebook for the latest on their menu, which changes according to what they can lay their hands on.
Then there’s The Travelling C.O.W. (Chef on Wheels), who’s also revamped the old-school food truck with its affordable gourmet menu. They’re probably best-known for their Fish and Chips, but the selection also includes Teriyaki Chicken Salad, Mac & Cheese, and Spaghetti Bolognaise. More gourmet choices include Wagyu Beef Burgers, Chilli Crab Pasta, and even everyone’s favourite – crabcakes. They were most recently spotted at the inaugural edition of Serangoon Picnic but can usually be found at Golden Agri and Singapore Polytechnic. CBD folk – they’re trying to get to you! And if you’re charmed by the idea, you’ll be glad to know that these guys are available for private hire.
