Their onsite watersports guru Christian has a reputation for being able to get anyone standing on a surfboard within a few hours! Personally, we loved the paddle boarding down the Wanukaka River. Local children swim over from the riverbanks and try to hitch a ride – it’s a great way to interact with the community and is completely uncontrived.
Another amazing aspect of Nihiwatu is the Sumba Foundation. Not only do they set up key initiatives such as providing clean water to the villages, they also combat malnutrition by feeding the children and then educating them on how to sustain their living by growing green beans.
Vast and airy with large front decks, the bungalows all have plunge pools, extremely comfortable beds, and gorgeous bathrooms with outdoor rain showers. You will be pleased to know that Wi-Fi is available, though there are no televisions or sound systems. Never fear, TVs (and DVDs) can be found in the communal living, perfect for kiddies and rainy days.
