Restaurant review: Kaiserhaus

A look inside Kaiserhaus, Singapore

Living in a culinary capital like Singapore, we can literally eat our way around the world in our tiny red dot, whether it’s sizzling Spanish tapas or the freshest sashimi from Japan. But of course, there is certainly room for the more obscure. Kaiserhaus at swish new mall Capitol Piazza gives us a taste of just that, and we’re super stoked for a chance to up our foodie knowledge on the traditional cuisine of the Habsburg Empire.

Like the food we encountered on our travels to Habsburg nations like Austria and Ukraine, portions at Kaiserhaus are huge (top marks for food sharing here), so make sure to check with your servers on which dishes are best shared. For instance, the Crispy Chicken Salad ($19.50) could feed three average eaters. This, combined with the Crispy Fried Mushrooms ($12), were enough to send us into a near food coma. And those were just starters!

Hasburg fare that is fit for royalty

For the mains, brace yourselves for a lavish, Austrian-style spread. The chef-recommended Tafelpitz ($38 for a single serving) is a gourmet beef dish made of grain-fed beef (rump and oyster blade) served in a copper pot with beef bouillon and vegetables. Tip: spread the bone marrow on toasted rye bread first before tucking into the beef bouillon with potato rosti and creamed spinach.

The Salon Beauschl ($24) – or more commonly known as Veal Ragout – is a traditional Viennese favourite. This hearty, meaty dish made of veal heart and lungs, is served up with bread dumplings and deeply satisfying for a carby, chilly evening.

After stuffing yourselves silly (trust us, you will), take a breather and soak in the resto’s lovely interiors before finishing off with dessert. Every inch of the restaurant is an attempt to embody the splendor of the Habsburg Empire. Decked out in dark wood, swanky chandeliers and lots of velvet and leather, opulence is the word here. It’s safe to say that Kaiserhaus wouldn’t look out of place on the upscale streets of Vienna, Budapest or Prague.

Kaiserhaus’ Mozart dumplings

Once you’re ready for sweets, order up a cup of Viennese Melange before diving headfirst into the Mozart Dumplings ($13). Filled with marzipan, nougat pralines and rolled in a sweet crumb crust, these delish morsels of flavours are served with pistachio ice cream and marinated raspberries. If you’re looking for a strong hit of chocolate to end off a meal, you’ll hit jackpot with an Austrian favourite – the Zaunerstollen ($23-$39.50), a luscious nougat praline mixture of wafers, hazelnuts and Chocolate, which (dare we say it) beats every other chocolate we’ve ever had.

Kaiserhaus, #02-06 and #03-06 Capitol Piazza, 17 Stamford Road, Singapore 178907, p. 6377 0013. Open Mon-Thu 10.30am-12am, Fri-Sat 10.30am-1am, Sun 10.30am-12am.
