Super Loco Review | Mexican Restaurants | Honeycombers Singapore

Duxton Hill’s perpetually buzzing Mexican taqueria, Lucha Loco has a sexy little sister and, as the name goes, it’s super. There’s a festive, cavalier vibe about the three-month-old Robertson Quay spot thanks to the vibrant colours and street-style ambiance – which deviates slightly from the grungy-hip, unpolished interiors of the flagship restaurant.

Lucha’s awesome tacos make an appearance on Super Loco’s menu, but our money is on the new street food additions, co-created by Jason Jones of Mamasita restaurant in Melbourne (don’t get us wrong, the tacos are still great). So we went on an ordering spree to have a bite of everything during our visit (all part of the job, really), and nailed down our top five favourites. Have a go at these plates!

Elotes, $8

This is no ordinary grilled corn. Super Loco’s elotes are oh-so flavoursome, juicy, and coated in a thin film of mayonnaise and sprinkled with cotija cheese and chilli dust. The mere thought of having it again is enough to send our pulse racing.

Ceviche De Pulpo, $20

The generous serving of octopus comes in smoked paprika and squid ink for a tangy, fresh taste of the ocean in one dish. Seafood lovers, don’t miss out on this one!

Arrachera con Chile Ancho, $32

Super Loco’s soft corn flour tacos ($9 – $12) boast generous fillings of everything from fish, meat and vegetarian options. But for us, with eyes bigger than our stomachs, we went for the Arrachera con Chile Ancho – a grilled skirt steak, marinated in a glorious ancho chilli spice rub – and were well rewarded.

Pastel De Elote Azul (Blue Corn Cake), $14

Drizzled with agave and Mezcal-infused cream, we love its caramelised edges, nutty texture, deep blue colour, and pops of fresh, sweet corn kernels. If that’s not enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, there are the Super Churros, served with orange and mezcal sauce ($12), to be had.

Pineapple Southside, $18

Wash down the piquant plates with this fruity-boozy concoction, made with Don Julio Reposado tequila, pineapple juice, jalapeño agave, fresh lime juice and a dash of mezcal. We also fell in love with their Horchata ($7), a rice milk and cinnamon drink that could only be compared to rice pudding in a glass.

Robertson Quay’s big on brunch, and we heard through the grapevine that they’re joining the fold soon. Meanwhile, Super Loco is only open for dinner.
